Post-hardcore pioneers Black Flag emerged in 1976, led by guitarist, primary songwriter, and sole continuous member Greg Ginn. The group defined the image and aesthetic of punk rock, setting the bar for American West Coast punk and becoming a prominent influence on punk subculture in the US and abroad. Black Flag rose to prominence throughout the early 1980s, releasing six studio albums between 1981 and 1985 before disbanding in 1986. The group briefly reunited in 2003 and again ten years later in 2013 when they released their first album in over two decades, What Theā¦ (2013). Black Flag is considered by many to be one of the first ever hardcore punk bands in music history. They remain well-respected within punk subculture and are often considered pioneers in the underground DIY record labels movement, which gained momentum in the 1980s amongst punk bands.
